Atlas Ocean Voyages Intimate Yacht Style Cruising Antarctica, Mediterranean & more

atlas cruise lines

Despite being an upscale cruise line, Atlas Ocean Voyages is far from being stuffy and pretentious. Yes, the crew is here to pamper you and fulfill your every need, and the decor is worthy of a five-star hotel, but the atmosphere is very casual. That’s because this is a cruise line that caters to outdoorsy travelers who don’t care much about dressing up and making a fuss about anything. Note that the included-drinks menu on World Navigator features one to three mid-level brands of each major type of liquor.

There's also a small auditorium adjacent to the Atlas lounge that is used for lectures related to the destinations that the ship visits and other presentations. The ship will sail regularly with experts on the places it is visiting for such lectures. For instance, on the line's initial sailings this month between Greece and Egypt, an Egyptologist was onboard giving talks about the Egyptian pyramids, Alexander the Great and other related topics.

But in early 2022, the line plans to convert six of these cabins from rooms designed for two people into "solo suites" designed for just one traveler. All meals are served in the Lisboa restaurant, with buffet breakfasts (with some menu options), buffet lunches, and a combination of à la carte and buffet dinners, each night with a different international theme. Ever-changing hot stations at lunch and dinner buffets included stir fry, pasta, and carving stations. Most memorable to me was Thanksgiving dinner, served as a buffet with all the classic menu items, from carved turkey to cranberry sauce to mashed potatoes. And finally, there's always an afternoon tea with a full range of finger sandwiches and sweets. The inviting public spaces and lounges offer cozy seating for two and larger communal areas so guests can gather with newfound friends as they meet throughout the expedition or voyage.

Even those without Antarctic experience were well-educated on the continent, from its wildlife to its environment to its geopolitical history. The ship's accommodations boast marble spa bathrooms with a walk-in mosaic glass shower, a marble seat, a rain head, body jets, and L'Occitane toiletries. A nice feature is that the glass shower door has a latch, so it doesn't swing open. Other stateroom amenities include terry bathrobes, slippers, and luxurious Egyptian cotton linens from the Portuguese brand, Lameirinho. Nespresso coffees and Kusmi teas are in-room amenities, as is daily replenished sparkling and still water from the onboard Vero water refilling station. A flat-panel television with an "infotainment" system includes daily onboard lectures and programming.

There were no children on my sailing, but Atlas did not advertise any kid-friendly programming in pre-voyage materials or onboard. The cruise line set its minimum age to eight years old on polar cruises, but given the sometimes dangerous conditions in Antarctica, I'd personally suggest bringing older children only. Despite my sailing being the inaugural Antarctica voyage—there were just two short preview sailings beforehand—I found the crew to be a well-oiled machine, and very friendly to boot. The expedition staff comprised a combination of Antarctic veterans and novices, the latter with guiding and naturalist expertise in other parts of the world.

Founded as a touring company in 1987, Scenic began offering luxury cruises on European rivers in 2008 and added ocean voyages in 2019. Many guests also managed to stay awake after dinner for musical performances by the cruise director, guest entertainer, and talented piano player and singer. Once on board, guests are checked in while seated in the Atlas Lounge with a glass of Champagne. Built by West SEA Shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, World Traveller is 423 feet in length,  9,930 gross tons, and features eight decks (six for passengers). The ship is a Polar Class C vessel with an Ice Class 1B-certified hull, and it's built with the latest fuel-efficient hybrid power management and propulsion systems.

"Our intention always is to raise our fares as we go along, as occupancy fills. But at the moment, because of where we are, I think the value compared to what else is out there right now is just extraordinary." Expeditions launch from a mudroom on Deck 3 that has plenty of space for suiting up. There are lockers for every cabin so you don’t have to lug your outdoor gear back and forth to your cabin.

There is also a discount of up to 15% off each segment if you buy three, 10% if you buy two. We had one couple tell us that their roundtrip airfare from Newark to Nice was more expensive than their cruise. "That brings in the educational component that guests normally get in an expedition-type product in the polar regions," said Rodriguez, whose past cruise tenure has been at Crystal and Oceania. "It brings guests into a more immersive experience in the Med than just a regular cruise itself." In fact, the line has been doing so well that it has placed a third ship, World Voyager, in service for the upcoming Antarctica season -- ahead of schedule.

Additional megabytes of data come with an extra charge that starts at $45 for 500 megabytes. Plus, there are two more outdoor observation areas at the back of Decks 5 and 6 — the two main cabin decks. This allows passengers in cabins a quick place to run outside for a view when the captain announces that wildlife has been spotted. World Navigator also offers a close-to-the-waterline outdoor observation area at its very tip that will offer equally stunning views during expeditions in scenery-rich places such as Antarctica and the Arctic.

Atlas’ two small ships World Traveller and World Navigator, with more to come through 2024, can dock steps away from iconic city centers, bringing travelers straight into cultural immersions. Guests experience enriching explorations while enveloped in relaxed luxury, enjoying highly personalized service and all-inclusive amenities. Both ships also have a marina, which allows passengers to use yacht-style water toys during their voyage. World Traveller is an elegant ship with beautifully appointed and light-filled public spaces.

The corridors leading to the 98 staterooms and suites are particularly noteworthy, with wood-paneled walls, maritime-inspired black and white photos that are also found throughout the ship, and navy blue-clad leather doors. Even in the ship's marble public restrooms, no attention to detail is missed. World Navigator and its coming sister ships have a relatively wide range of cabin choices including several categories of suites. As is typical for expedition ships, there are relatively few cabins on the vessels in all -- fewer than 100.

The vessel accommodates 196 guests (double occupancy) and 127 crew (slightly less for expedition sailings). Having launched in 2021, Atlas Ocean Voyages is still building its identity and its audience. All cruises are all-inclusive, from alcoholic beverages to excursions to gratuities. Yacht-style cruising is about traveling on small ships with fewer than 500 passengers. The reduced size of the ship (in this case 413 feet long and 33 feet wide) allows for access to remote and lesser-known ports of call where no other cruise ship can go. More often than not, you’ll dock in small towns you’ve never heard of and where there are no other international visitors, only locals going about their day.

We invite explorers to focus on finding epic adventures and forging intimate connections. And it’s all made possible by a genuinely warm and attentive crew, officers, staff, and the entire Atlas team. With year-round expeditions for every season, we offer an adventure for every kind of explorer. Our Cultural Expeditions by Atlas™ take guests on journeys through vibrant history, art, architecture, folklore and local communities of Northern Europe, Iceland, South America and the Caribbean, as well as aboard Transoceanic expeditions. Polar Expeditions by Atlas™ are made for intrepid spirits who love a challenge, exploring the furthest reaches of the Earth in Antarctica, Patagonia and the Falklands, the High Arctic of Svalbard, Norway and Greenland. Aboard Epicurean Expeditions by Atlas™, culinary and wine connoisseurs will dive deep into the cuisine cultures of Italy, Spain, France, the Greek Isles and hidden gems amid the Mediterranean.

In Porto Venere, for example, we talked to two sisters who were off the ship as soon as possible, taking a ferry to the northernmost town of the Cinque Terre so they could spend the entire day walking on their own. As your team of explorers help with ORCA’s work and research, you’re invited to deepen your connection with incredible marine animals, enhancing your appreciation for the beauty of the polar regions. Enjoy sailing through the Tower Bridge in London and tying up alongside HMS Belfast as you cross the River Thames between two bridge towers held together by two horizontal walkways, often mistakenly called "London Bridge. It is truly a spectacular sight.
